Semrush analyzed 126 million U.S. AI search prompts between January and April 2026, tracking how brands appear across ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode, and Google AI Overviews. The headline number: 45% of marketing leaders cannot accurately measure their brand's AI search brand visibility, and only 9% have tools to track all the metrics that matter. More striking — AI Overview citations from pages ranking in the top 10 organic positions fell from 76% to 38% in eight months. Ranking high in Google no longer predicts AI citation.
What Semrush found: 126 million prompts, four platforms#
Semrush's 2026 AI Visibility Index expanded from an initial 2,500-prompt sample to 126 million U.S. search prompts analyzed across ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode, and Google AI Overviews from January through April 2026. This is the largest public dataset of AI search citation patterns published to date.
Three findings stand out.
First: the measurement gap. 45% of marketing leaders cannot accurately measure their brand's visibility in AI-generated answers. Only 9% have tools to track all the relevant metrics. Most teams operate without visibility into how AI platforms represent their brand.
Second: the unified workflow advantage. Teams that treat SEO and AI visibility as one workflow report 81% increased traffic or leads from AI platforms. Teams managing them separately report 36%. The 45-point gap holds across company sizes.
Third: platform citation depth differs widely. ChatGPT averages 15 sources per cited response. Gemini averages 3. The platforms select from different depths of the web with different logic, and a brand can win one platform while being invisible on another.
Only 9% of marketing teams have the tools to track all the metrics that matter for AI search brand visibility.
Why ranking high in Google no longer predicts AI citation

Eight months of data from Ahrefs tells the story clearly. In mid-2025, Ahrefs analyzed 863,000 keyword SERPs and found 76% of AI Overview citations came from pages in the top 10 organic positions. By March 2026, that share had fallen to 38%. The correlation between SEO rank and AI citation dropped by half in under a year.
Onely's 2026 AI visibility research confirms the pattern. About 60% of AI Overview citations now come from URLs that don't rank in the top 20 organic results. Traditional page-one rankings are one input into AI citation, not the primary one.
Citation consistency data makes this concrete. According to Jarred Smith's 2026 analysis, only 30% of brands maintain consistent visibility from one AI answer to the next. Just 20% remain visible across five consecutive runs of the same query. Rand Fishkin ran 600 volunteers through 12 prompts on ChatGPT, Claude, and Google AI Overviews, 2,961 times total, and found less than a 1-in-100 chance that ChatGPT recommends the same brand list twice for the same prompt.
Appearing in one AI answer is not the same as being consistently present. AI brand visibility requires reliable citation across repeated queries, not a single appearance in one session.
Three signals that consistently predict AI citation#
Omnibound's 2026 GEO statistics report covers 60+ data points on AI citations and brand visibility, identifying three content techniques that reliably lift citation rates. These are measured outcomes from controlled comparisons across AI platforms.
1Cite external sources in your content. Pages that reference and link to external sources see a 40% improvement in AI citation visibility. AI systems weight sourced claims over unsupported assertions.
2Include statistics with source attribution. Adding linked statistics to existing content produced a 41% citation lift, the highest single-technique gain in the dataset. Named numbers beat general claims.
3Quote named experts directly. Attributing statements to real, identifiable people added 28% citation visibility. Combined, the three techniques compound each other.
Content freshness amplifies all three signals. Pages not updated within 90 days are three times more likely to lose AI citations than recently refreshed pages. AI systems treat freshness as a trust signal, not just a date.
Sequential headings and rich schema markup correlate with 2.8 times higher citation rates across AI platforms.
Third-party placements have the clearest structural advantage. Content on external publications increases AI citations by up to 325% compared to content published only on owned domains. 85% of brand mentions in AI-generated answers originate from third-party pages, not the brand's own site. PR and media placements are not soft activities. For AI search, they are primary citation infrastructure.
Primary research creates the sharpest moat. Pages containing original data average 11.3 citations per page versus 3.4 for pages without original research, a 3.3x difference. Only 2.7% of cited pages qualify as genuine primary research, but they earn 8.4% of all citations. The return on original research is disproportionate to its apparent difficulty.
Citation behavior varies sharply between platforms. Perplexity cites sources in 97% of its responses. ChatGPT cites them in approximately 16%. These platforms require materially different optimization approaches.

Google AI Overviews now appear in 48% of all search queries, up from 25-30% at their 2024 launch. Queries with AI Overviews show a 30 to 50% average CTR decline for top organic positions. HubSpot reported losing 70 to 80% of its organic search traffic as AI Overviews expanded across its core topics.
"Lily Ray thinks GEO is mostly E-E-A-T done well. Rand Fishkin thinks the whole click-optimization frame is already obsolete." — AEO Vision, [2026 expert summary](https://aeovision.ai/articles/best-seo-experts-2026/)
The top 15 domains capture 68% of all AI citation share across platforms. Getting into that tier requires deliberate optimization, not just high-quality content. And the downstream effect is measurable: brands cited consistently across AI platforms see a 23.4% lift in branded search volume within 30 days, rising to 41.2% over 90 days.

GEO market size: The U.S. generative engine optimization market is projected to reach $365.4 million in 2026 at a 42.9% CAGR. 92% of marketers plan to optimize for AI search; 40.6% are actively doing it. (DGM News)
BrandCited is a GEO monitoring platform that tracks brand visibility across 9 AI search engines: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok, DeepSeek, Llama, and others. The BrandCited audit engine runs 30+ checks across structured data, content freshness, entity signals, and third-party citation coverage.
Citation consistency is a scored dimension in every audit. BrandCited runs each query multiple times and flags brands whose citation rate falls below threshold, then shows which content to update, which schema to add, and which third-party placements are missing.
Run a free audit at brandcited.ai to see your brand's citation rate across 9 AI platforms in 30 seconds.
1Run the same query about your brand five times on ChatGPT and Perplexity. If your brand appears in fewer than 3 of 5 runs, you have a consistency problem. BrandCited automates this test across 9 platforms.
2Add linked statistics to your top 10 pages. The Omnibound data puts this as the single highest citation lift at 41%. Start with the homepage and core product pages, adding two to three linked data points per page.
3Update any page not edited in the past 90 days. Pages not updated quarterly are 3x more likely to lose citations. A freshness pass across your top traffic pages can restore lost coverage within weeks.
4Secure earned media placements on industry publications. Owned content underperforms earned media by 325% for AI citation rates. Two or three strong third-party placements where your brand is named and linked will outperform site-only optimization.
5Add Organization, FAQ, and Article schema markup. Each has distinct citation benefits across different AI platforms. The BrandCited audit identifies which schema is missing on which pages.
6Unify your SEO and AI visibility tracking. The Semrush data shows 81% versus 36% traffic improvement between unified and siloed teams. If your SEO team lacks access to AI citation data, that gap is active right now.
