On August 31, 2026, Google began auto-expanding AI Overviews for select queries, filling the entire search page with an AI-generated answer and pushing every organic result off-screen. When this triggers, uncited brands receive no clicks from that query regardless of their ranking position. Brands cited inside the expanded Overview earn 120% more clicks per impression than comparable uncited competitors, according to Seer Interactive's 2026 CTR analysis. BrandCited monitors citation rates across nine AI engines, including Google AI Overviews, and shows which queries your brand answers and which it misses.

Google confirmed that AI Overviews now auto-expand for select queries, turning the full search results page into an AI-generated answer rather than showing a collapsible summary at the top.
9to5Google reported the change on August 31: for some queries, the "Show more" button no longer appears. Google's systems detect when a longer AI answer is most useful and expand the response, loading the full answer plus a follow-up "Ask anything" prompt box by default. Traditional organic links still exist but appear below the fold.
Google's rationale, quoted directly: "For some queries, AI Overviews may dynamically expand for topics where our systems determine it's most useful for people. Our research has shown that with this dynamic experience, users find Search more helpful and engage deeper in follow-up exploration."
Two facts that define the stakes: AI Overviews now appear on 48% of all Google searches, according to SEOProfy's 2026 analysis of 650,000 keywords. When a query triggers an expanded Overview, organic results below it receive near-zero click traffic from users who engage with the AI answer.

Why does full-page expansion change the citation math for brands?#
Full-page AI Overview expansion converts a query from a click competition into a citation competition. The only way to get traffic from a fully expanded query is to be cited inside the answer.
Search Engine Land's coverage of the update confirmed that the expansion is dynamic: Google can trigger it based on query type, not page category. That means commercial and mid-funnel queries, not just informational ones, are now candidates for full-page AI responses.
The citation advantage is measurable. Brands cited inside AI Overviews earn 120% more clicks per impression than uncited brands on the same query, per Seer Interactive's data. Uncited brands on queries with a standard AI Overview already lose 61% of their expected CTR, from 1.76% to 0.61%, according to Search Engine Journal. On a fully expanded query, that loss approaches 100%.
Brands with complete structured data, named author bylines, and content structured around direct answers to specific questions are the ones Google's AI selects for expanded AI Overview citations.
Stackmatix's 2026 structured data analysis found that sites with complete Tier 1 schema see 40% more AI Overview appearances. The highest-value schema types for AI citation are Organization, Article (or BlogPosting), FAQPage, and Person, all deployed as JSON-LD. SEOScore's 2026 FAQ schema guide reports that pages with FAQPage markup are 3.2 times more likely to appear in Google AI Overviews than comparable pages without it.
Content structure matters as much as schema. Google's retrieval layer selects passages, not pages. A brand's content needs to contain direct, self-contained answers to specific questions: paragraphs that make complete sense in isolation, with the answer in the first sentence. Content that relies on prior context, uses pronouns without named antecedents, or buries the answer in the third sentence does not get selected for AI-generated summaries.
Three content signals that correlate with AI Overview citation, based on observed behavior across BrandCited-monitored brands:
1FAQ sections with specific, factual answers (not "it depends" responses)
2Definition paragraphs that name the brand entity in the first sentence
3Data points with named sources, stated as complete, standalone sentences
What structured data gets a brand into expanded AI Overviews?#
The two schema types with the clearest correlation to AI Overview citation are Organization and FAQPage, both deployed as JSON-LD in the page head.
Organization schema tells Google what your brand is. FAQPage schema tells Google what questions your content answers. Combined, they give the AI system a structured record of both entity identity and content relevance, the two signals that determine citation inclusion.
Here is a minimal FAQPage JSON-LD block that meets Google's 2026 requirements:

"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "FAQPage",
"mainEntity": [
{
"@type": "Question",

"text": "AI visibility measures how often AI platforms cite your brand when users ask relevant questions. A brand with high AI visibility appears frequently in AI-generated answers. A brand with low AI visibility is absent from those answers regardless of its traditional search ranking."

Place this in a <script type="application/ld+json"> tag in your page <head>. Each question-answer pair becomes a candidate for direct inclusion in AI Overviews. The answer text must be complete in 2 to 4 sentences with no external reference needed.
Sites with complete Tier 1 schema (Organization, FAQPage, and Article) see 40% more AI Overview appearances. Sites without any schema are excluded from the citation pool for structured-answer queries.

How does BrandCited audit AI Overview citation readiness?#
BrandCited's audit engine checks for FAQPage schema, Organization schema completeness, author byline prominence, and content passage structure as part of its Technical and Content Optimization scores. If your brand is missing any of these signals, BrandCited surfaces the finding as a critical or warning item with the specific fix, not a generic recommendation.
The audit shows which queries your brand answers in Google AI Overviews and which queries your competitors answer that you don't. Run the audit free at brandcited.ai.
1Add FAQPage schema to your top five pages. Each answer must be 2 to 4 sentences, factual, and complete without external reference. Pages with FAQPage markup are 3.2 times more likely to appear in Google AI Overviews.
1Audit your Organization schema block. The Organization JSON-LD in your site's <head> must include name, url, logo, description, sameAs with LinkedIn and Wikipedia URLs, and foundingDate. Missing fields reduce entity confidence in Google's Knowledge Graph.
1Rewrite your homepage opening paragraph. Name your brand in the first sentence, define what it does in specific terms, include at least one number or named platform. Vague openers do not get selected for AI citation.
1Check Google Search Console for queries with AI Overview appearances. Filter for queries where your impressions are high but your CTR has dropped. These are the queries where an AI Overview appears and excludes your brand from click traffic.
1Run a BrandCited AI visibility scan. See your citation rate across nine engines, including Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok, DeepSeek, Copilot, and Brave, in 30 seconds. The scan shows which queries trigger AI Overviews where your competitors are cited and you are not. Run it free at brandcited.ai.
What queries trigger Google's auto-expanded AI Overviews?
Google has not published a complete list of query types that trigger auto-expansion. Based on observed behavior, informational queries with clear factual answers and broad search intent are the most common candidates. Google's systems trigger expansion when they determine a longer AI answer is more useful than a standard collapsible overview.
Does being cited in a standard AI Overview protect against the full-page expansion impact?
Yes. Brands cited in AI Overviews, whether the standard collapsible version or the expanded full-page version, receive 120% more clicks per impression than uncited brands. The citation advantage holds across both formats.
Will Google's Preferred Sources feature help my brand appear in AI Overviews?
Google's Preferred Sources feature lets individual users choose which sites appear more in their AI answers. It expands visibility for users who have chosen your site, but it does not replace the need for structured data and high-quality content. Site-level citation in AI Overviews depends on Google's systems, not on user settings.
How long does it take for new schema markup to affect AI Overview appearances?
Schema changes take 2 to 6 weeks to affect AI Overview appearance rates, based on observed behavior across BrandCited-monitored brands. Google's crawlers need to re-index the page, the Knowledge Graph needs to update, and the AI Overview generation system needs to re-evaluate citation candidates. Google Search Console's Rich Results Test confirms whether schema is being read correctly.
What is the difference between AI Overviews and Google AI Mode?
AI Overviews appear at the top of standard Google search results pages for queries where Google determines a synthesized answer is useful. AI Mode is a separate, conversational search interface where every response is AI-generated. Google confirmed at I/O 2026 that the two are merging into a single AI Search experience, with users flowing between standard results and AI Mode follow-ups.
