Google AI Overviews now appear on 48% of all search queries, and only 38% of brands cited in those Overviews hold a top-10 organic ranking for the same keyword, down from 76% one year ago. Today at Google I/O 2026, Google is expected to announce Gemini 4 as the next AI Overviews model. Every Gemini upgrade reshuffles which brands get cited. BrandCited is an AI visibility intelligence platform that monitors 9 AI platforms and shows you where your brand stands before the next reshuffle hits.
Google's annual developer conference opens today at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View. AI search takes center stage. Sundar Pichai signaled additional search changes during Alphabet's Q1 2026 earnings call, pointing to Gemini's multicontext capabilities. The keynote is expected to cover Gemini 4, broader AI Mode availability, and updates to how AI Overviews rank sources. All three will affect which brands get cited and which disappear from AI-generated answers.
What Google is announcing at I/O 2026 for AI search#
Google I/O 2026 centers on four categories that affect brand visibility in AI search.
Gemini 4 for AI Overviews. Google is expected to announce Gemini 4 as the default model for AI Overviews. When Google upgraded from Gemini 2 to Gemini 3 on January 27, 2026, 42% of domains that had been cited were replaced within weeks, according to SE Ranking's citation tracking study. Gemini 4 will trigger another round of domain replacement.
AI Mode expansion. AI Mode, Google's conversational search interface that returns AI-generated responses without traditional organic results, is expected to reach broader availability. AI Mode ends 93% of searches without an outbound click, per Search Engine Land. For brands not cited within AI Mode, that traffic disappears.
Updated citation signals. Gemini 3 introduced query fan-out, where a single user query is decomposed into multiple sub-queries before citation sources are selected. AI Overviews now average 15.22 source links per response, up from 6.82 in November 2024, per . More sources per response does not mean easier access. The citation pool is larger but concentrated in sites with specific structural signals.

Agentic search preview. Google's Remy agent, a system that handles complex multi-step tasks across apps, is expected to debut at I/O. Agentic search opens a new citation channel where AI queries run on behalf of users before the user types anything.
BrandCited tracks AI Overview citation status across each of these Google surfaces as separate audit checks, not bundled into a single score.
Why your Google ranking no longer predicts AI Overview citations#
Ranking on page one of Google used to nearly guarantee inclusion in AI Overviews. That relationship is gone.
Ahrefs studied 863,000 keywords and found that only 38% of pages cited in AI Overviews also rank in the top 10 for the same query, down from 76% in early 2025. A separate BrightEdge analysis puts the overlap at 17%. A third of all AI Overview citations now go to pages that don't appear in the top 100 results at all.
The consequence is direct: a brand can hold the top organic position across dozens of commercial queries and receive zero AI Overview citations. Google's organic ranking algorithm and its AI Overview citation algorithm share some inputs but optimize for different outputs. Organic ranking weights link authority and keyword relevance. AI Overview citation weights content structure, entity clarity, and factual density.
Only 38% of pages cited in Google AI Overviews also rank in the top 10 for the same query, down from 76% in early 2025, per an Ahrefs study of 863,000 keywords.
BrandCited separates AI Overview citation status from traditional ranking data in its audit because the two require different fixes. See the full AI visibility audit methodology for how each check is weighted.
How Gemini upgrades reshuffle which brands get cited#
Google's switch to Gemini 3 for AI Overviews on January 27, 2026 changed citation behavior in three documented ways, per SE Ranking and ALM Corp.
42% of domains lost AI Overview citations within weeks of the Gemini 3 rollout. These were brands that had been cited under the previous model but did not meet Gemini 3's structural requirements.
Source count per response rose 32%, from an average of 6.82 to 15.22 links. The new sources skewed toward sites with explicit entity markup, FAQ schema, and named authors.
Query fan-out began. Gemini 3 breaks a user query into sub-queries and draws citations across all of them. A brand that covers one facet of a topic in depth can now surface in a response about a related but not identical query. This rewards topical coverage over single-keyword optimization.
Gemini 4 is expected to deepen all three patterns. Brands with strong entity markup, structured content, and topical depth will retain or improve citation rates. Brands without them will see another round of displacement.
BrandCited's weekly citation tracking shows citation changes as they happen, not six weeks after the fact. Check your current citation status at brandcited.ai.
The 4 signals that determine AI Overview citations today#
Signal 1: Direct answers in the first sentence.
AI Overviews extract the first sentence of each page section as the candidate answer for sub-queries. If your first sentence is a setup ("When considering how to optimize for Google AI Overviews..."), that section will not be cited. If it is a direct statement of fact, it will. Rewrite every H2 section on your key pages so the first sentence contains the complete answer.
Signal 2: Entity establishment in Google's Knowledge Graph.
Gemini grounds answers against the Knowledge Graph before crawling fresh content. If Google does not recognize your brand as an entity, Gemini will not cite it with consistency. The fastest path to entity status is accurate Organization schema on your homepage:
json
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "Organization",
"name": "[Your Brand]",
"url": "https://yourdomain.com",
"description": "[One sentence: what your brand does specifically]",
"foundingDate": "20XX",
"sameAs": [
"https://linkedin.com/company/yourbrand",
"https://twitter.com/yourbrand"
]
}
Combine this with consistent third-party mentions from indexed sources. That combination is the foundation of AI Overview eligibility.
Signal 3: FAQ schema on key pages.

AI Overviews cite FAQ content at a higher rate than any other schema type. Each FAQ answer must be complete in 2-4 sentences with no reference to other parts of the page. The FAQPage JSON-LD must match the visible page content exactly, or Google will discard it. BrandCited's FAQ schema check flags mismatches between schema and visible content as a critical audit finding.
Signal 4: Content freshness.
AI Overviews apply a 3-month citation cliff: content published more than 90 days ago without updates receives lower citation consideration over time. Updating dateModified in your BlogPosting or WebPage JSON-LD, adding a new data point, and refreshing the answer capsule all send freshness signals that AI crawlers read. Updating the timestamp without changing content does not count.

GPT-5.5 Instant is now ChatGPT's default model: OpenAI's GPT-5.5 Instant cut hallucinated claims by 52.5% on high-stakes prompts in medicine, law, and finance. Lower hallucination rates change which brand claims ChatGPT accepts as accurate enough to surface. (TechCrunch)
Perplexity Deep Research upgraded to Claude Opus 4.5: Perplexity now runs Deep Research on Claude Opus 4.5 for Pro and Max subscribers, handling 780 million queries per month. Perplexity cites brand-owned domains in 41% of commercial-intent answers, the highest rate of any major AI search engine. (Perplexity changelog)
GEO divergence from SEO confirmed at scale: Research from Brandlight found the overlap between top Google results and AI-cited sources dropped from 70% to below 20%, confirming that SEO and GEO now require separate optimization tracks. (LLMrefs GEO guide)
How BrandCited audits your AI Overviews visibility#
BrandCited's audit engine runs 30+ checks against your site, including Organization schema completeness, entity Knowledge Graph status, content freshness signals, FAQ schema implementation, and citation presence across 9 AI platforms. AI Overview citation status is a standalone check, separate from your organic ranking data. If competitors appear in AI Overviews for queries where you don't, BrandCited shows the specific audit items responsible. Run the free audit at brandcited.ai or review what's included in each plan.
1Add Organization schema to your homepage today. Use the JSON-LD template in the technical section above. Google's Knowledge Graph reads this before crawling. Without it, Gemini will not resolve your brand as a citable entity, regardless of content quality.
1Rewrite the first sentence of every key page section. Each first sentence should contain the complete answer to the heading's question. Remove all setups. AI Overviews extract first sentences as citation candidates. If the first sentence is not the answer, that section will not be cited.
1Add FAQ schema to your 5 highest-traffic pages. Each FAQ answer must be 2-4 sentences and self-contained. Use FAQPage JSON-LD that matches the visible content exactly. This schema type gets the highest AI Overview citation rate of any structured data format.
1Update `dateModified` on pages older than 90 days. Add a new data point, a new FAQ question, or a fresh example, then update the timestamp. Content past 90 days without updates sits below the freshness threshold for AI Overview citation consideration.
1Run a BrandCited scan before Gemini 4 rolls out. Establishing your AI Overview citation baseline now gives you a before-and-after comparison once Gemini 4 takes effect. Read the GEO playbook for the full optimization checklist, then run a free scan at brandcited.ai.
The Gemini 4 announcement at Google I/O 2026 will trigger another reshuffling of AI Overview citations. Brands with entity markup, structured content, and topical depth in place will hold or gain ground. Brands without those signals will see another round of displacement. Run a free AI visibility audit at brandcited.ai. You'll see your score across 9 AI platforms in 30 seconds, with every issue ranked by impact.
What did Google announce at I/O 2026 for AI search?
Google I/O 2026 opened on May 19, 2026 with Gemini 4 for AI Overviews, broader AI Mode availability, and agentic search features as the expected centerpiece announcements. The Gemini 3 upgrade in January 2026 replaced 42% of previously cited domains. A Gemini 4 rollout will trigger a comparable domain reshuffle. BrandCited tracks AI Overview citation changes on a weekly basis so you see the impact as it happens, not weeks after the fact.
Why does my brand rank on Google but not appear in AI Overviews?
Google's organic ranking algorithm and its AI Overview citation algorithm optimize for different signals. An Ahrefs study of 863,000 keywords found that only 38% of AI Overview citations come from pages ranking in the top 10. AI Overviews weight entity establishment, structured content, and freshness signals, not keyword-relevance scores. Ranking well on Google no longer puts your brand in the AI Overview candidate pool.
How do I get my brand cited in Google AI Overviews?
Start with Organization schema on your homepage to establish your brand in Google's Knowledge Graph. Rewrite the first sentence of each major page section to answer the section heading's question. Add FAQ schema to your key pages, with each answer complete in 2-4 sentences. Update content older than 90 days, since AI Overviews apply a freshness threshold that older unrefreshed content falls below. BrandCited's audit shows which of these checks your site is failing and in what priority order.
BrandCited vs manual AI Overviews monitoring: what's the difference?
Manual monitoring means running your brand queries one by one across platforms, with no audit data, no historical record, and no diagnosis of why you're not being cited. BrandCited runs 30+ structured checks against your site, monitors 9 AI platforms in parallel, and delivers a citation map showing which platforms mention your brand, which queries trigger those mentions, and which specific fixes would raise your score. The full audit completes in under 30 seconds.
How often does Google change which sources AI Overviews cites?
Google's AI Overview citation sources shift with every Gemini model upgrade. Gemini 3 replaced 42% of previously cited domains when it launched in January 2026. Gemini 4, expected at I/O 2026, will trigger another reshuffle. Between major upgrades, citation sources shift on a weekly basis in response to content freshness signals, new indexing, and query pattern changes. BrandCited monitors this weekly so changes appear in your dashboard as they happen.
